Sea Freight Shipping Costs – Less than a Container Load (LCL) UK Charges

If your goods are arriving into the UK by sea and are in a shared/groupage Container, then the following are some of the regular charges which you may receive: (Other than Customs clearance charges, and UK Collection/Delivery)
Note: If your goods are arriving as a Full Container Load (FCL) then click here to see what UK charges usually apply to that service.
A majority of these charges are based either on the size (per Cubic Metre) or the total weight (per Metric Tonne) or where the goods have come from, or even perhaps it will be a minimum charge, due to the shipment being a relatively small cargo shipment. It is therefore very difficult to give an overall average amount which is payable for each charge.
These are the 2 main charges incurred:
- Terminal Handling Charge (THC) – approx. GB£ various
- Documentation Fee – approx. GB£ various
If you contact us, we can give you a quote for the shipping of your goods and advise what UK charges you are likely to face.
If, however, your supplier is arranging the shipping of your goods, then it is even more difficult to guess what other charges you may receive. It could one or more of the following:
- China Import Service Fee (CISF) – approx. GB£ unknown
- Rate Of Exchange (ROE) Differential – approx. GB£ unknown
- Handover Charge – approx. GB£ unknown
Due to the level of uncertainty regarding the UK charges, we would always advise that you negotiate terms of FOB with your supplier. We would recommend that you use a UK-based Freight Forwarder (someone like ourselves) and also a reputable one which is a member of the British International Freight Association (BIFA), again someone like ourselves.
